Mentor Graphics Optimizes QuickUse Development System for Design Knowledge Management

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2001--Mentor Graphics Corp., the leader in customizable design reuse infrastructures and methodologies, today announced the availability of version 3.0 of its QuickUse(TM) Development System (QDS).

QDS 3.0 enables the creation of efficient and expandable knowledge management systems that provide designers with web-based access to information they need to be more productive with new tools, to improve design quality, and to reuse existing design data quickly and with confidence.

Since its introduction in June 1999, the QuickUse Development System has formed the foundation for System-on-Chip (SoC) design environments for several customers, including Toshiba Corporation, and has been used to measure significant design cycle time reductions in excess of 30% depending on the engagement's implementation. QDS 3.0 expands on the core features offered in the original version of the product by offering users extended capabilities for SoC design as well as knowledge management, IP qualification, flow integration, data exchange and more.

Time-to-market pressures in the SoC market force a frequent retooling of design environments, straining corporations trying to reuse knowledge and data accumulated from previous design projects. QDS 3.0 was designed to ease the transition to new environments or enhance the performance of existing flows. By facilitating the creation of a customized design environment, QDS 3.0 increases design productivity by improving team communication and collaboration through web-based information sharing, automating standardized procedures, such as IP qualification and data integration, and providing user guidance for complex processes, such as functional verification.

QDS can be customized to create many types of design environment functions, from simple design repositories, to functional verification management systems, to complete SoC design platforms. Mentor Consulting facilitates the deployment and enterprise-wide adoption of these customized knowledge data management systems by providing on-site training, deployment and maintenance programs supporting worldwide, enterprise-wide usage.

``Knowledge management is the key to bridging the gap between designer needs and design environment realities,'' said Phil Bishop, vice president and general manager of Mentor's Consulting division. ``QDS 3.0 enables companies to build scalable design knowledge management systems on a proven, scalable platform that encourages design reuse, guards design quality and enhances the overall productivity of chip designers. Mentor continues to differentiate itself from other EDA consulting organizations by providing a unique blend of productized offerings and on-site service and support.''

    QuickUse Development System 3.0

    Optimized Design Knowledge Management

    FACT SHEET

The QuickUse(TM) Development System (QDS) 3.0 enables the creation of efficient and expandable knowledge management systems that provide designers with web-based access to the information they need to be more productive. Highly scalable, the system can be customized to create many types of design environment functions, from simple design repositories, to functional verification management systems, to complete System-on-chip (SoC) design platforms.

Mentor Consulting facilitates the deployment and enterprise-wide adoption of these customized knowledge data management systems by providing on-site training, deployment and maintenance programs supporting worldwide, enterprise-wide usage.

QDS Enables the Following Customizable and Scalable Design Knowledge Management Environments:

    Internet-based Design Repository

QDS creates an internet-based repository of design data. The QDS repository protects critical design data including IP and chip design elements, scripts, verification suites, documentation and design flows.

    IP Qualification

QDS manages the qualification of IP design data for industry standards such as VSIA and RMM and can direct data through automated qualification flows such as Mentor Consulting's QuickUse Methodology. Qualification profiles may also be customized to address variations in standards for a company, a particular site, or a specific design group. (See Mentor Graphics Automates the IP Qualification Process with the QuickUse IP Qualification System, June 14, 2001.)

    Team Collaboration

Design projects are often performed across design locations or between companies. QDS provides systems for designer communications, work-in-progress design management and design issue tracking that may be used to create design collaboration environments. The QDS environment can also be customized to support design review processes and the system provides an audit trail application that tracks the development and usage of design components.

    Design Data Exchange

The internet-based QDS environment may be configured to provide automated XML exchange of design data from suppliers, to customers, or between internal design organizations. This provides the basis for numerous supply-chain management applications.

    Flow Integration

QDS is capable of integrating design data with chip design methodologies through a flexible, tool-independent flow management system. This enables automation of key design functions and the development of guidance systems for new designers. The organization may also use this to manage and measure design productivity using the QDS-based environment.

    SoC platforms

Some SoC design structures are well suited for complete design reuse. For such designs, QDS can be configured into an automated rapid chip integration system. Patent-pending algorithms and socketization techniques are employed by the system to create the SoC database from user specification. The QDS system takes the chip through the complete design flow, from specification to tape-out, and includes running an automated functional verification suite for the design.
